The incessant attacks and lost of properties to unknown gunmen on the Rivers waterways have become worrisome to both boat owners and commuters in the state as human rights are being violated on many occasions on the seas following the inability of security agencies to track down perpetrators.
Worried by the menace of sea piracy on the waterways, chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, (MWUN), Andoni Unit, Chief Henry Ogbularia has decried the attack on the drivers and commuters by men of the underworld, describing it as “barbaric and inhuman”.
Chief Ogbularia who spoke to The Newswriter crime desk, through his secretary, Ugwem Mbaba following the attack on the Andoni waterways, Monday which claimed two speed boats and leaving commuters at the mercy of God, appealed to Government to come to their aid in tackling sea piracy in the area.
The maritime union boss, called on the government at the state to equip the security operatives on the sea with sophisticated weapons to enable them wage war against the miscreants.
He further requested the government to provide for the Andoni waterways a patrolling gunboat on daily basis to provide security on the sea.
Speaking further he called on the government to assist the Andoni unit of the union to procure the necessary life saving apparatus which the union could not acquire due to non-profitable ventures, saying that the union main trust is to provide services to the citizenry.
The union, however, sympathizes with those concerned on the incident of last Thursday following a boat mishap as well as those who lost their boats to unknown gunmen.
The union boss is calling on the security agencies to beam their search light on the waterways and assist in tracking down the perpetrators of Monday’s robbery. ###
