Resolving Rivers’ Judiciary Crisis

It is a common belief that the judiciary organ of government is the last hope of man. The judiciary is very essential in any democratic society. Without judiciary man’s activities in the society will be very complex and difficult to understand.

The judiciary organ interprets the law of the land and also punishes people who violate the law. Therefore absence of judiciary system could cause chaos in the society. In the modern society, the judiciary has compelled individuals not to resort to jungle justice, while seeking for redress in any issue confronting them.

In Rivers State all is not well with judiciary system, as the activities of the State High Court have been grounded for over four (4) weeks.

The state chapter of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN headed by one Comrade Sobeye Sokari-Goerge has been on strike since the National Judicial Commission, NJC appointed Hon. Justice Daisy Okocha to act as the Administrative Head of the Rivers Judiciary.

The lingering strike and crisis rocking the state judiciary will not do good to anyone considering the importance of the courts in conflict resolution in the society. We will advise that the major actors in the crisis should sheathe their swords and begin to tread the path of peace and dialogue.

This we believe strongly if they adhere to this advice it will save the state from unnecessary tension.

As far as we are concerned the warring factions know what to do so that the four (4) weeks old strike will be called off. This is not the best time judiciary workers should go on strike in the state. Let us do the right thing now. ###
