Well Done, Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State
Last Saturday, the people of Ekiti State went to the poll to vote a governor of their choice that will administer the affairs of the state in the next four (4) years.
The main contestants in the last Saturday’s election were: the incumbent governor of the state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayo Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Michael Bamidele of the Labour Party (LP). The election was a fierce contest. Two days to the election because of the security situation, three (3) state governors were barred from entry into the state capital, Ado-Ekiti. These governors are Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Adam Oshomole (Edo) and Rochas Okorocha (Imo).
Shortly after the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the leadership of Pro. Attahiru Jega announced the election results. According to the electoral body, out of 360, 455 voters, 203, 090 voted for Fayose, 120433 for the incumbent governor, and 18,135 for Bamidele, while 10,084 votes were voided.
As INEC declared Fayose as the winner of the last Saturday’s Ekiti State election, the incumbent governor accepted his defeat. This is unlike some Nigerian politicians that find it very difficult to accept defeat in election.
We salute the courage exhibited by Dr. Kayode Fayemi. It is a real shown of a spirit of sportsmanship. Every politician needs to emulate the footsteps of the outgoing governor of Ekiti State as 2015 is fast approaching. Let Nigerian politicians learn lessons from Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s behavior and on how to accept defeat in an election to reduce tension in governance. ###
