Amaechi Warns Against Use Of Explosive In Fishing

The River State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has warned those who used tyre to roast meat and dynamites for catching fish in the state to desist from such act or be punished.

Governor Amaechi gave the warning while addressing environmental workers during this year’s world environmental day celebration at the Civil Centre, Port Harcourt.

According to him, punitive measures would be adopted to ensure that those who are using tyre for roasting meat and dynamites for catching fish in Rivers State are punished accordingly.

Governor Amaechi who described environment health workers as the engine room of the Ministry of Environment and urged them to beam their searchlight on the defaulters of the ugly situation and enjoined the public to always report the defaulters to the ministry or to relevant agencies.

Governor Amaechi who was represented by Hon. Ipalibo Harry, the Commissioner for Employment, Rivers State reiterated his administration’s commitment towards promoting healthy environment for the benefit of residents of the state, pointing out that the state had in no small measure put in place measures to protect the environment from being polluted by illegalities of some persons.

The State Chief Executive who disclosed that his administration had set up Committee on Flood Control, commended Prof. Belgan Wingston, the state chairman on Flood Control in his efforts in reducing flooding in the state and enjoined the residents to always clean their environments to ensure healthy environment in Rivers State.

In his address the Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli disclosed that the theme of this year’s World Environmental Celebration Day was “Small Island developing state”.

The commissioner who noted that the state government under Governor Amaechi led administration was doing it best to ensure clean healthy environment in the state and urged the residents not only to clean their environment rather should desist from act of illegal bunkering activities.

Earlier in her speech, Hon. Victoria Nyeche the chairman of the House Committee on Environment in the Rivers State House of Assembly who was also the chairman of the occasion noted that cleaning of environment should not rest in the hand of the state government alone rather should be a collective efforts among residents of the state and enjoined the public to always clean their environment on daily basis to ensure health environment.

In his speech, the Rivers State Director of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mr. Oliver Wolugbom frowned at the manner in which men destroy what is created by God such as environment.

He, however called on the public to make adequate use of what God has given them. ###
