Union Election: Crisis In Rivers NLC, As Chairman, Vice On War Path

ORUGEFresh crisis now rocking the leadership of the Rivers State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC over who becomes the next chairman of the union. The tenure of the current chairman, Dr. Chris Oruge will expire next year.

Clandestine campaigns have begun into various offices, especially the position of the chairmanship. Comrade Ada Williams is gunning for the chairmanship of the Rivers NLC. Comrade Ada Williams is currently the 1st Vice Chairman of the union.

He has already constituted his campaign team who are moving from one union to another, soliciting for support. William’s Campaign Committee is headed by a prominent unionist in the state.

However, sources told this weekly that the NLC chairman, Dr. Oruge does not want Comrade Ada to succeed him, therefore vowed to support one Mrs. Beatrice, the treasurer of the union. This weekly also gathered that if Mrs. Beatrice could not scale through the hurdles, Oruge’s plan B is to feature one Comrade Evans Olunwo, the 2nd Vice Chairman against Comrade Ada Williams, the 1st Vice Chairman of the union.

As at the time of filing in this report, Oruge and Comrade Ada Williams are locking horns, as the leadership of the union has been divided over ethnic lines namely: riverine and upland dichotomy.

Dr. Oruge is an uplander from Ikwerre extraction, while Comrade Ada is from the riverine community of Bundu-Ama in the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.

Mrs. Beatrice whom Oruge is supporting is from the Ikwerre extraction by marriage. Observers, however predicted crisis in the union if the issue at state is not put under control so as to organize an election that will be free from any form of electoral malpractice.###
