The State Chairman Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Chief Chris Oruge and his counterpart in the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Mr. Franklin Ajunwa have honoured the chairman of Eleme Local Government Council, Hon. Oji Ngofa with the prestigious award of excellence and the most labour friendly chairman in the state.
The duo made the presentation at the LGA headquarters, Eleme last week and commended the council chairman for the prompt payment of salaries, payment of minimum wage and conditions of service enjoyed by the workers of the council.
The state NULGE president said the award is in recognition of Hon. Ngofa’s provision of transformer to boost electricity at the NULGE Consulate.
The union also said that since the inception of his administration six years ago, the council chairman has not owed the workers, but has provided bus to assist the union for logistic.
Also speaking, the NULGE CTC chairman, Eleme LGA chapter, Comr. Gospel Mimi said workers of the LGA have enjoyed in no small measure, the incentives of the council boss, Hon. Ngofa.
Comr. Mimi congratulated the chairman of council on numerous projects, building of the Eleme Local Government Ultra Modern Secretariat Complex, adequate security, payment of staff arrears, building of town halls at Eteo, Ateto, Ebubu and the construction of various roads network in the area. The payment of students’ bursary and scholarship scheme among others.
Earlier, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Eleme chapter chairman, Comr. Olungwe Olungwe used the occasion to thank, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi for the employment of 13, 000 teachers in the state.
In an address presented at the May Day celebration at Eleme, the council headquarters, the council boss, Hon. Oji Ngofa condemned the level of criminality and the unholy activities of the Boko Haram particularly in the North-East of the country.
He said the only way to build an enduring peace in the country is through good governance.
The chairman stated that the underdevelopment in the country today is due to parochial interest and party affiliation which negate all round development.
He said good governance is the focal point by which development will reach the common man. Hon. Ngofa tasked those in higher authority to continue to do things that are right which leads to justice and unity.
He blamed the Boko Haram sect on what he called “self-help” which is inimical to peace and stability. The council boss thanked NLC, NULGE for the award and said if there is chance he will do more.
In an interview shortly after the event, Hon. Ngofa told journalists that corruption in the country was as a result of those who want to satisfy their spouses, friends, family members, associates, party members above the interest of all. The theme of this year’s workers day, was “Unity, Panacea For Sustainable National Development”.
The occasion was chaired by Prof. Sunday Ndowa Lale, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt.
Highlights of the event was the presentation of award to the chairman of council, Hon. Chief Oji Ngofa and cultural displays. ###
