Andoni: Council Chairman Fingered In Fresh Communal Crisis

Crisis that could have resulted into another bloodletting between the Unyengala Doni town and Agana town, communities in the Andoni Local Government Area was last Saturday averted following a swift intervention of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in the area.

The story as condemned by many has it that, the Agana youths last Saturday had carried out an attack against and pulled down the signboard indicating the entrance and exit from Unyengala community located on the boarder line between the both communities.

It was further gathered that after pulling down of the sign board, the youths in their numbers attacked the St. Francis Catholic Church located on same piece of land and destroyed the GMP windows of the church.

The Newswriter gathered that there was a subsisting judgment in favour of the Unyengala community as the proud owners of the said land, though there is an alleged appeal to that judgment.

Confirmed source told The Newswriter that, the matter was about 28 years in the law court before the said judgment sometime last year.

The Agana community had accused the Unyengala community of attacking the Catholic Church in reprisal of the pulling down of the signboard.

But the Unyengala community has swiftly described the allegation as laughable, wondering how they could have carried out such attack, against themselves, pointing out that in the heat of the crisis that resulted in the lost of lives and properties, the church was not tampered with and questioning that could it be now that nothing has happened, judgment in their position that they would attack to destroy the church?

Unyengala community has therefore implored its youths to remain law abiding but cautioned detractors to be mindful of the weight of the law.

Meanwhile, the Unyengala community have condemned the arrests of her youths in connection with the civil disturbances last Saturday and accused the JTF of lopsided action when only the innocent Unyengala youths were arrested while the Agana youths who perpetrated the crisis were almost freed.

The executive chairman of Andoni, Sir. Orom Nte Ereforokuma was however, allegedly fingered to have been knowledgeable of the averted crisis, and was called upon to pursue peace other than instigating crisis.

According to the Unyengala community voice, the release of Agana youths who were arrested by the JTF was prompt on the chairman’s arrival and intervention while others release were delayed.

It would be recalled that Unyengala and Agana communities were over a decade ago embroiled in crisis that claimed lives and properties, which its replacement is difficult to come by.

It is the opinion of some youths of both communities as they called on the police and other security operatives, that proper investigation be carried out into the matter and the culprits punished accordingly as they are no longer interested to witness the ugly experience of the past.

Efforts to reach the executive chairman, Mr. Ereforokuma for comments were not successful as his mobile line was too busy to connect as at the time of going to press. Investigation on the matter and further report would be done appropriately. ###
