Making Our Water Ways  And Creeks Safe

Of recent travelers on our rivers and creeks are no longer safe due to the increasing activities of sea piracy. As a result the people from the coastal region or communities find it difficult to travel by sea.

Those whose businesses are within the creeks, water ways and high sea are mostly affected by the heinous acts of the sea pirates.

Sea pirates have caused so much havoc on fishermen, fish monger, and other travelers. Last month unknown gunmen suspected to be sea pirates unleashed terror on trade boats along the San Barbara river. They carted away millions of naira and other valuable items such as outboard engines, fishing nets and other equipment.

Also on several occasions Bonny bound passengers speed boats were attacked by sea pirates. Sometime during the attack women were raped, men beaten and property destroyed.

The activities of the Sea Pirates have negatively effect on the nation’s economy. For instance it affects the marine and the fishing industries. These two industries are important in the socio-economic development of the country. If the activities of sea piracy are not properly handled, both local and foreign businessmen and women will not invest in the marine sector.

Let us use this medium to appeal to government and relevant authorities to ensure that security is beefed up by equipping the officers and men of Nigerian Navy  and Marine police to patrol the water ways to keep our creeks and rivers safe from sea pirates.  ###
