Worried by the high level of gas flaring and pollution in the Niger Delta and its environs, a clergyman in Rivers State has called on the federal government to partner with the expatriates to end it.
In a chat with journalists during a one day conference organized by the Harvest Time Fellowship of Churches International, (HTFCI) Nigeria in conjunction with Christian Empowerment and Development Initiative (CEDI), Rivers State chapter at the Bible Faith Church in Port Harcourt, Bishop Godswill E. D. Jumbo, the National Director of HTFCI who lamented the environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region said the best option to solve the problem was to engage the expatriates on the matter.
Bishop Jumbo who disclosed that the theme of the conference was “where is the Lord God of our fathers, pointed out that the conference was organize to seek God’s intervention on what is affecting the nation, especially the Boko Haram insurgency and corruption which has eaten deep into the fabric of the Nigerian society.
The clergyman who recalled how the Movement For The Actualization Of The Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, the Niger Delta militants among others were terrorizing the nation but were later subdued due to the prayers of Christians.
He commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his recent approach to the dreaded Boko Haram when he stated that his administration would fight the Boko Haram “Fire to fire” and lauded General Kenneth Minimah, the new Chief of Army Staff in his effort in ensuring that the menace is stopped.
Speaking on the topic: Community Policing Why The Church Should Partner With The Police” the chairman of the Police Community Relation Committee, PCRC Rivers State chapter, Mr. Young disclosed that the church can partner with the police in the state and nation to checkmate crimes.
According to him, the five elements of the spiritual backing to subdue crime include: partnership, empowerment, problem solving approach, deliverance and accountability, stressing that the formation of the Neighbourhood Watch should be part of the responsibility of the church, pointing out that this will go a long way in reducing crimes in the society. ###
