Non Payment of Salary: Teachers Threaten To Drag Amaechi To Court

Teachers in Rivers schools have threatened to institute a legal suit against Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for what they call “non-payment of salary”.

It would be recalled that seven (7) months ago, the Rivers State government recruited over 13,000 teachers.

Since their recruitment the teachers alleged that they have not been paid. Thus they have resolved to drag the government to court to explain his reason why he refuses to clear their backlog of salaries.

Speaking to this weekly, on Monday, one of the affected teachers said that they have already contacted a lawyer to file all necessary documents that would compel the governor to pay them.

According to him, the affected teachers are passing through pains, alleging that some of them cannot take care of their families and also that of their house rents.

“How can one feeds without money? We are always in our respective schools doing our jobs. And for seven (7) months no payment. It becomes unbearable now, so we have no option than to consult a lawyer that will sue the State Government in court on our behalf”, the teacher said.

He further pointed that if the state government no longer needs their services, they should be paid all the necessary arrears so that they quit the job than the Governor and his Commissioner for Education to keep mum over the “pathetic situation”, which is very unfair and dehumanizing”.

“Can the governor work without payment? Can his wife Judith go about her ESI project without any payment? Can the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly discharge their legislative duties without payment?  The governor should think of these”.

The only venue that is left for us now is to go to court,” the teacher concluded. ###
