The A.K Horsfall Foundation and the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) will on Thursday, March 20, 2014 hold a Peace and Security Conference in Port Harcourt.
According to a statement signed by Tekena Fiberesima (Horsfall Foundation) and Opaka Dokubo (NUJ chairman), the auspicious conference is aimed at engendering peaceful atmosphere in the state, especially as political activities hot up ahead of 2015 general elections.
According to them, the conference seeks to bring together critical stakeholders in the state with the sole aim of reaching consensus on how best to ensure a crisis-free Rivers state before, during and after the general elections.
While recalling the ugly scenarios that happened in the past, the conference is resolved at not allowing Rivers state go back to the dark days of hostility and suspense.
A key note address would be delivered by Chief Albert Horsfall, former Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), National Security Organization (NSO) and State Security Service (SSS).
The Peace and Security Conference is scheduled to hold by 11am at the Omni Events Centre, Eastern Bypass (Beside AP Filling Station), Ogbunabali, Port Harcourt.
Also expected to speak at the conference include Rivers Commissioner of Police, Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Rivers state, representative of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), religious leaders, among others.
Among the participants expected at the conference include students’ union leaders, religious and political leaders, women and youth groups, professional associations, security agencies, administrators, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), amongst others.
The statement called on members of the public to avail themselves the opportunity of meeting and agreeing on what would make the state peaceful.
