Fishing Out Corrupt Police Officers In Rivers

Statutorily, the primary aim of the Nigeria Police Force is to maintain law and order in the society. Without the existence of Police force the society will witness unprecedented chaos and instability. Life will become unsafe and brutal and short as it were in the Thomas Hobbian state of nature.

Therefore, the importance of the existence of police in any given society cannot be over emphasized.

Last week the Rivers Police Command promoted no fewer than sixty-one (61) of its officers to new ranks. The promotion according to the Commissioner of Police in charge of the state, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin was based on hardworking and diligence. Let us use this medium to felicitate with those hardworking police officers who were promoted. There is nothing wrong to say thank you to anybody who is diligent in his or her work.

Due to the high wave of violence, killing and kidnapping in state, the Police Commissioner, Mr. Ogunsakin has dispatched his men and officers to various locations within and outside the Port Harcourt metropolis to curb the social vices. We highly applauded Mr. Ogunsakin for making series of moves to tackling the social problems.

However, most of the officers on our roads instead of discharging their duties with utmost sense of diligence and carefulness they are busy collecting bribes from drivers and also harassing innocent and law abiding citizens. We condemn this attitude, because it does not portray the Nigeria police force in a good light.

We call on the Rivers State Commissioner of Police to constitute amonitoring team to ensure that officers who are engage in this frivolous act should be brought to book, if possible show them the way out and or give appropriate punishment. ###
