The principal of the Federal Government Girls College, Abuloma, Port Harcourt, Mrs. Nicolas Adeh has said that girl child education is critical to national development.
The principal stated this at the 39th annual inter-house sports competitions held at the Federal Government Girls College Abuloma school field on Saturday.
Mrs. Azeh in her welcome address said the aim of the school is to develop the female students to their full capacity, where they will be developped physically, mentality and emotionally.
She stated that the school is not only an avenue to be educated but a place to nurture sound mind especially to discover potentials, talents that can propel the child to the next level.
The administrator posited that sports was part to what promotes a child to excel in areas of endeavour as its task was to mentally meet the common challenges of life.
The principal commended the students especially those who have represented the school in different sporting activities both locally and nationally. She charged the students to maintain the spirit of sportsmanship which allow both the winner and the loser at every competition in life.
The principal used the event to solicit for sports equipment to accelerate the level of sporting activities at the school.
Also speaking, one of the guests of Honour, Mrs. Wokekoro stated that students should engage in all the activities of school thereby building the culture of peace, security and promote the spirit of peaceful co-existence and to live in harmony with one another.
Mrs. Wokekoro who was also from the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja said sports is part of education and students should participate actively. “The students should maintain the spirit of sportsmanship and participate in the sporting activities of the school” she said.
She posited that sports is a big business as it is crucial to the development of every nation while commending the Nigerian Home base Eagles for the 3rd position in the just concluded CHAN 2014 in South Africa.
In an interview with journalists shortly after the event the principal, Mrs. Azeh said there is an improvement in the sporting activities of the girls this year than last year. She said after the sports programme the students are expected to face their academic programme as some students will soon face external examinations.
In another development the vice chairman of the parents Teachers Association, Federal Government Girls College Abuloma, Dr. Amina Febresima corroborated the fact that the 2014 inter-house sports competition was bigger and better than last year.
A traditional ruler High Chief Obene Tegeye Benebo who was at the event commended the school authority for the event.
Highlight of the event was a “beauty pageant” known as catch the train.
The first prize went to Lavenda House with 207 points, second position went to Primrose with 188 while Zinnia scored 152. ###
