PH Club Tennis: Former Nigeria No. 1 Surrenders Title To Brother

It was a little wonder on Sunday 3rd of February as former Nigeria No.1 Tennis player, Sunday Maku, surrender the 2nd Keves global leasing tennis championship title to his younger brother, Kunle Maku, who qualified to play the final match with in that particular championship.

In professional tennis language when a player abandoned or surrendered a progressing match to his opponent it is called scratch.

Speaking to The Newswriter sports, Kunle Maku disclosed that this is the first time he is winning his brother at this level, and had  never won him at national level as he had kept his title as champion for 5 years.

The game was abandoned or rather surrendered to Kunle Maku by Sunday Maku in the second set, hence ending the game on 2-4 for Kunle Maku to claim the winner trophy.

The championship started on the 22nd of January and ended on the 3rd of February, 2014 at the Port Harcourt club 1928 tennis section.

48 players registered for the championship, leaving 6 players to emerge winners, while 24 players went home with gift items.

In court 1, W. Chijioke Amunadi, R. Emenike Nwokeoji, Pat Ugoji, John Nwaja are all winners while in court 4 W. Sam Umeli, L. Akpuluma, F. Obire, T. Garande are winners with trophies.

Court 3 emerged the following winners, T. Azike, F. Inamngi, Onari Brown.

Court 2 emerged, W. Charles Oruitemeka, R.I. Williams, A. Jaye E. Afangide, T. Dokubo, K. George, M. Yebefura are the winners.

All winners were given various gift items raising from refrigerator, table top fringe, 1 pass my neighbour generator set, gas cooker and blender etc.

Speaking to sports journalists shortly after the prize given ceremony, the Managing Director and sponsor of the championship, Chief Ikenna Okafor said he put up the championship just to see the tennis players have fun, to create that enabling atmosphere for exercise. He maintained that the championship is going to be sustained annually.

He also promised to support the tennis section with N200,000 (two hundred thousand naira) and promised to renovate court 1.

Captain Obiora Emmanuel, thanked the sponsor and reminded the section for a tennis match to be played at Aba, saying that the section will test run all what was given to them by Keves global leasing.

GM of Keves global leasing, Masi Henry Umuna, on his part, said, next edition will be much more better as they are going to improve on it, stressing that his company will make Port Harcourt Club tennis section a busy and better one. ###
