Before the Rain Begins

Very soon the dry season will pave way for the wet season. Farmers pray for the coming of rainy season for bountiful harvest. In as much as the rainy season is good for farmers, at times it has negative effect on some business outfits. Business activities become slow during rainy season.

However, one of the major challenges associated with the rainy season, especially in the coastal states is flooding.

Flooding is an enemy of mankind. It has rendered so many persons homeless and paralyzed several businesses. Some have also lost their dear ones to flooding.

In Port Harcourt, headquarters of Rivers State, there are some areas that businesses collapse with drops of rain as a result of flooding. Some of the causes of the flooding are non-availability of good drainage system, lack of better road network, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, lack of urban planning and several others.

The residents of Ada-George road, Egbelu/Ogbogoro road, Rumuolumeni road, Aba road amongst others suffer a lot whenever there is a torrential rainfall. Sometime they lost properties and some valuables estimated millions of naira to flooding.

The basic aim of good government is to initiate projects that will put smiles on the faces of the masses. Therefore, before the rain starts falling this year, government should technically devise ways of tackling the perennial flooding by completing all on going road projects, constructing good drainage system and punish those found dumping refuse indiscriminately.

This we think will reduce the rate of flooding in the state.###
