The concept “democracy” is very difficult to define. Many political scientists, sociologists, social scientists and academia have attempted severally to define democracy in different ways.
Some look at democracy as civilian’s rule, others perceive democracy as formation of political parties in other to control the machinery of Government.
Democracy is much more than this. But I view democracy as a freedom from servitude. A system of government that allows its citizenry to participate in the politics and governance of the state.
However, the most acceptable and popular definition of democracy was given by the former President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln.
He defined democracy as the government of the people by the people and for the people. This definition has stood the test of time. By ex-President Lincoln’s definition democracy centres on the masses.
In other words democracy is a system of government that formed by the people, which represent the people’s rights and working towards uplifting the living standard of the people. Hence, democracy is all about the people, and not selected few or individuals.
Though different type of governments exist such as oligarchy, aristocracy, authoritarism, diarchy and several others, but democracy is the most preferred one. The worst democratic government is far better than the best military government. Democracy protects the rights and privileges of the citizens.
Since 1999, Nigerians have been enjoying uninterrupted Democracy. The basic democratic structure which is the legislature is working effectively at the National level. In some states the legislative Assemblies are not functioning, in other states, they cannot be separated from the Executive Organ. Democracy preaches separation of powers to avoid emergence of tyrannical or despotic government.
It is very sad that fifteen (15) years after, Nigeria’s democracy is still at embryonic state. Elective office holders cannot effectively represent their people. Public funds meant for community development are being diverted by politicians to their bank accounts. The ruling class is not sensitive to the plights of the masses. The people find it difficult to eat three (3) square meals. Democracy does not require slavery, but freedom and liberty. Our elective officers should not engage in act that will prevent the masses from enjoying the dividends of Democracy in Nigeria. ###
