Former Nigeria international queen of the tracks, Mrs. Mercy Nku Esimoneze has tasked sports personalities to leverage grassroots sports by taking grassroots as the background of every sporting activities, if Nigeria would do well in sports, internationally.
According to Mrs. Mercy Nku, those who have been privileged to come to limelight should be the ones to support grassroots sports, she added that for that to happened, the sports authority too should involve those who are honest and are ready to contribute to sports growth in the country.
Mrs. Nku was the most consistent female athlete of the tracks in her days, winning laurels for Nigeria.
She featured in 100mtres and 200metres but specializing in 100 metres. She also ran at the 1999 All African Games.
Till she retired from athletics, she has ran alongside the likes of marry Onyali, Mary Omagbemi and was the most consistent among the duo. She is also recognized by the international athletic federation (IAF).
However, she assured Nigerian’s that there is hope for Nigeria, if grassroots sports would be supported in it through stance by involving the right honest sports personalities who had passed through that sport “Nigeria would do well in sports if talents were discovered from the grassroots and nurtured with honesty, by the Nigeria sports commission. Like my days, we were put in national camp after we were discovered from the grassroots, we were fed, and given some allowances, this makes us focused and dedicated to wear the national colour and we gave out our all to won laurels”. ###
