Curbing Rural-Urban Migration
The basic statutory responsibility of every government is to initiate policies that will attract positive development. Any Government that does not tailor its policies and programmes towards the betterment of her citizenry will in do distant time become unpopular.
Therefore, every responsible Government owes her people the obligations to uplift their standard of living. Thus it is very important for policies makers in the Governmental affairs to begin to think towards the development of the rural communities. Lack of infrastructure such as electricity, water supply, and other social amenities in the local areas have propelled rural dwellers to move to urban centres in search of better living.
Due to this uncontrol rural-urban drift the cities are over populated which cause untold hardship to the urban dwellers. Crime is increasing day by day, the cost of living is very high, while the cost of house rent has gone out of the reach of the common man. These are some of the problems associated with concentrating development in the urban cities.
The rural-urban migration also has a negative effect on the domestic economy as farmers and fishermen abandoned their traditional occupations and go for white collar jobs in the urban centres.
If Government could site some laudable projects in the local areas, the uncontrollable rural-urban drift will be reduced. Hence it is the duty of the Government to carry out aggressive infrastructural development and also to build industries in the rural communities so as to curb the social problem of rural-urban migration.###
