A non-political group known as United Ikwerre Chiefs in Rivers State has restated its support to the commitment by Rivers State Government towards the development of Trade fair in Port Harcourt.
Chief S.N. Worlu JP, a Chieftain of the group said that it is the intention of Government not to depend on imported goods but to support Local producers and manufacturers hence the Government put its weight to see that the just concluded Port Harcourt Trade Fair was successful. Chief Worlu who spoke on behalf of Ikwerre Chiefs said what is important now is on how to generate employment and not how to sell what others have produced in their countries, whereas some of those things can be produced in Nigeria and generate jobs.
Chief Worlu posited that reviving manufacturing firms and creating jobs should be the major focus of manufactures and the economic managers of the country.
He urged Nigerians to play down on class issue of who belongs to group has influenced the consumption patterns which he said has mostly favoured imported goods at the expense of Local production and manufacturers.
In the same vein, Chief Worlu JP equally called on indigenous manufacturers not to be discouraged by low patronage from Nigerians.
He noted that Nigerian’s manufacturers were endowed with enough skills to compete favourably with their foreign counterparts.
“Given the necessary tools, the indigenous manufacturers can favourably compete with foreign producers. Nigerians are not lazy and are serious minded people.” he said. ###
