Editorial: Combating Corruption In Nigeria

Indisputably corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of the Nigerian society. Due to the ever increasing rate of corruption in every sphere of our National life, Nigeria is rated as one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

This is a country where corruption is institutionalized, while corrupt officers are being celebrated. Most of our elected officers and public office holders are corrupt. Funds meant for the development of communities are diverted to somewhere else.

Corrupt public officers display their ill gotten wealth publicly without anybody questioning them.

Crimes and corruption fighting agencies such as Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC are powerless to carry out their constitutional functions in combating corruption in the country.

Corruption has done so much harm to the nation’s economic as foreign businessmen and women fear to invest, because nobody will risk his or her money to do business in a nation where corruption is being celebrated. We have very bad image as a country within and outside the African continent.

It is our prayer that the EFCC, ICPC and other relevant agencies should put more stringent measures to declare war on corruption in Nigeria. ###
