A reliable information reaching our political desk on Monday had revealed that confusion rocked the appointment of some key officers to pilot the affairs of the Rivers State chapter of the newly registered All Progressives Congress (APC).
Three (3) politicians who are very close to the state governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi are jostling for a chairmanship position of the state APC. Those who are eyeing the leadership position are: Hon. Ikanya Ibiamu, Williams Igwe and Hon. Esuku M. Esuku.
Hon. Ikanya Ibiamu was a Commissioner in the Ministry of Special Duties in Governor Amaechi’s first tenure in office. He is also a serving member of an important committee in state. Williams Igwe, a close political associate to the Governor, who deputized Prince Tonye Princewill as a running mate on the platform of the defunct Action Congress (AC) in 2007 gubernatorial election in the state. While, Hon. Esuku M. Esuku, a frontline politician from Andoni Local Government Area was a former chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Rivers State.
Dependable source informed our political correspondent that, the delay in the formation of the executive body of the Rivers APC is an alleged plan by the state Governor to impose Hon. Ibiamu as the chairman on the party faithful.
Our political correspondent reported that the Amaechi’s plan to impose Hon. Ibiamu on the party did not go down well with other strong members of the APC. According to them ACN was one of the registered political parties that collapsed and formed the APC.
“Williams Igwe and Esuku M. Esuku were one time chieftains of the defunct ACN, so common sense demands that one of them must lead the APC”, a source told our correspondent.
According to the source, the inability to choose the leadership of the party has hampered the membership registration of the APC in the state. ###
