Global Warming: Nigeria Tasked To Maximize Oil Profit

The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers has tasked the Federal Government to speedily implement the National Policy On Climate Change and Response to the current advocacy on reduction of Green House Gas Emission by 80%.

Chief Engr. Faithful Abbi Abbiye Suku dropped the hint at a public lecture of fellowship entitled “The Green House Pressure: A Threat To Our National Development at Hotel Presidential over the weekend.

The guest lecturer stated that the unfriendly activities related to oil exploration and exploitation have caused great damage to the atmosphere resulting destruction of the ecosystem and causing the depletion of the Ozone layer which according to him endanger life, due to global warming. Engr. Abbiye Suku said that carbon dioxide emissions have affected sea level rise, extreme weather occurrence, loss of biodiversity and required changes in agriculture productivities while hoping that Nigeria will address the disaster accompanied by global warming by the recent approval of the National Policy On Climate Change and Response Strategies.

The former Group Executive Director Corporate Services of NNPC noted that, “We must bear in mind that the main thrust of climate change is reduction of carbon dioxide emission from fossil fuel.

Our economy survives on the backbone of revenue generated from fossil fuel export” oil profit now and diversity before the oil will no longer be needed by the international buyers.

Engr. Abbiye Suku maintained that with the on-going campaign by the industrialized nations to reduce Green House Gas Emission by about 80% as amplified by the United States and the European Union in the long term means cutting down on petroleum use, “Oil may not be needed in short years to come”.

Earlier in his address, the chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Port Harcourt Chapter. Engr Goodluck Ikenyiri disclosed that the chapter amongst other professional obligation organizes workshop, technical presentation and seminars to enhance and update the technical knowledge of her members.

He further explained that the institute plans to engage mechanical students in AutoCAD among others.

Engr Ikenyiri told participants that the annual public lecture is always bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience from the professional among them.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the event, the Deputy Vice Chancellor University of Science an Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt, Prof. H. I. Hart advised Nigerians to move with the world on the same pedestral.

Prof. Hart stated that if Nigeria did not utilize the proceeds from oil properly now, time will come when the oil will no longer be needed as explained by the lecturer.

He warned that Nigeria should not be used as a dumping site for foreign goods and other contaminated materials from the developed countries.

The University Don said it is imperative for the Nigerian Government to the experience from such lecture and find a lasting solution to our oil gains before it will become a rejected commodity since the world is changing on a daily basis.

Highlight of the programme was the conferment of fellowship on Engr. Faithful Abbi Abbiye Suku. ###
