The 53rd Independence celebration was marked with a soccer competition amongst social recreational football clubs in Port Harcourt.
The epoch making independent Unity Allstars soccer competition was sponsored by Hon. Aye Atamah Pepple, representing Bonny Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Six teams competed for the coveted Independence Allstars Unity Soccer Competition trophy amongst 6 social recreational Football Clubs in Port Harcourt city.
Cartel International Football Club, xprofessionals Football Club, Crystal stars Allstars football club, Port Harcourt in the finals to lift the trophy. Allstars international Football Club beats Liverpool Allstars Football Club by alone goal.
The competition was played at the newly rebranded Amaechi No. 1 Bende Street pitch, on independent day, 1st October, 2013.
According to the sponsor, the competition is going to be sustained annually. First placed team was rewarded with cash prize of N200,000 (two hundred thousand naira) first runner up went home with cash prize of N70,000 while third place team went home with N50,000.
Crystal stars produced the highest goal scorer, Hon. Emic Robert and also produced the most valuable player, Hon. Bamson Edward.
The competition brought old time friends in old township who have not seen themselves for years.
It was a thing of joy for them to see themselves being alive to mark Nigeria’s 53rd independed day celebration in a unique style.
Speaking to The Newswriter sports, the sponsor said “naturally I am a sportsman, so it is very important for people like me t support soccer in Port Harcourt.
I did this to foster unity in Allstars Football Clubs in Port Harcourt, so I thought of putting this competition together”.
He said, he felt elated to have brought old time friends from old Port Harcourt Township to celebrate Nigeria’s 53rd independent day in unity through soccer.
He also reaffirmed that Allstars independent Unity Allstars competition will be an annually event.
Adding that the support and encouragement, he had is quiet encouraging. He maintained that from what he had done, others may draw inspiration to also encourage football development in the country, as far as our super falcons and super eagles is concern.
“Gone are days Port Harcourt used to have the likes of www. NB white soccer competition, today Port Harcourt does not see these competitions in the schools anymore” he stated. ###
