Super Eagles Tunisia 94 Nations Cup hero, Thompson Oliha died without the federal government of Nigeria fulfilling the pledge made to the Keshi captained Tunisia 94 Super Eagles in winning the African Cup of Nations for the country.
The federal government as a way of motivation pledged to give out a house each to the players of that squad that made the Nation proud by lifting the AFCON trophy for the second time.
The first time Nigeria won the AFCON competition was 1980 at home soil, where the Super stars like Christian Chukwu who actually captained that squad. Adokiye Amiesemeka, Segun Odegbami, Muda Lawal, Felix Owoblow and others raised to the occasion by practically proving to the rest of the African continent that Nigeria is a force to reckon in soccer.
Despite the joy the midfield maestro and his colleagues brought to the federal government was only keen in paying them back with lips service, FG promised to honour the soccer heroes of that squad but failed in it promises.
Thompson Oliha alias the midfield marshal as captain Stephen Keshi used to call him by then, was a delight to watch when he is on duty for Nigeria in the soccer field.
He was also instrumental to the victory of the Super Eagles 1994 Tunisia Nations Cup victory with his splitting passes from the midfield to the likes of Samson Siasia, Late Rashidi Yekini, the goal king of the squad.
Many players of that set have died without their promised houses given to them by the federal government.
Oliha’s death is too many a sad incident to the Nigeria soccer fraternity. Few Nigerian oversea based players have used this treatment to judge the Nigeria football federation that also informed their decision of either to play for Nigeria or not.
This has affected Nigeria so much that certain wave making players of Nigeria origin had been lost to other countries.
The Newswriter sports desk also joined others to condemned the federal government outrageous callous attitude of not fulfilling promise made to her players. ###
