The residents of Ada-George, in Rumueme community, Obio/Akpor Local Government of Rivers State have called on the Commissioner of Police Joseph Mbu, to improve surveillance in their community over night robbery and rape.
The residents made this call in Port Harcourt after a three-man gang of armed robbers broke into a house at Ada-George Road, where they carted away valuables and raped the ladies amongst them.
The chairman of the area’s landlord’s association, Mr. Jona Olumati, told newsmen that with the current state of insecurity in Ada-George most of residents are no longer sleeping at the night.
He said the recent robbery was one of many such incidents in the community and there had repeated complaints to the police on the crime upsurge, but to no response.
“My major concern is the issue of rape, there is no compound where they will rob without raping the ladies. We have written several letters to the police ,especially to Ada-George Police Station,” he said.
He said further, “we are calling on the Commissioner of Police to mount surveillance in the area at night, the police can do it, robbers are not stronger than the police.
We are also thinking to get vigilante group in the area, but one of the challenges of vigilante is that of mix-up. We don’t want to involve criminals as members of vigilante considering what is happening to communities with vigilante group, he added. Within the space of time,
an armed robbery operation occurred at the popular Waterlines along Aba / Port Harcourt Express Road, Rivers State, during which the sum of N9 million was said to have been stolen. No casualty was recorded in the incident.
The Newswriter gathered that the incident occurred at about midday that fateful day, opposite the MTN Experience Centre office, causing pandemonium along the ever-busy road, as commuters and hawkers were thrown into confusion as they scampered for safety.
The gunmen, who allegedly rode on a power bike, were said to have trailed their victim who was driving a Toyota Camry saloon car and took advantage of the traffic jam to rob him.
“When the bandits double-crossed the driver, who was alone in his vehicle one of them alighted and ordered him to open his booth, pointing a gun at him. He complied without resistance,” an eyewitness told this weekly.
It was gathered that immediately the man picked the bag containing the money, he fired some gunshots in the air to disperse the crowd.
Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Angela Agabe, confirmed the incident, but said no money was stolen.
