It was a gory sight on the 13th of April 2013 at Akpajo in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, when a young girl of about 13 years believed to be one of the hawkers along the road was crushed to death by a moving trailer that allegedly lost control and ramped into a group of hawkers in the area, killing her on the spot and wounding several others.
An eye witness account said the girl was in the company of other women or hawkers when the unexpected happened.
Our correspondent who stumbled into the incident, reported that the brain of the dead girl was splashed on the road as her lifeless body laid cold at the scene of the accident.
Sympathizers who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity recalled that the Rivers State government has severally banned street trading to no avail, as perpetrators had always cited poverty as excuse for indulging in the illicit business.
They called on the Rivers State Government to enforce to the latter the ban on street trading, as according to them this will go a long way to eradicating the dangers associated with hawking along the streets. ###
