Parents of Electrocuted Victim Petitions Rivers Assembly

Parents of an electrocuted victim, a 12 year old boy has called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to help prevail on the Power Holding Company of Nigeria PHCN to provide fund for the medical treatment of their son.

Master Uchechukwu Ewurum, the victim was electrocuted by a high tension cable of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria PHCN recently.

The parents of the boy who petitioned the Rivers State House of Assembly claimed that their son was electrocuted due to the negligence of PHCN, appealing to the state government and House of Assembly to help provide fund for their son’s treatment, as well as prosecute the Power Holding Company of Nigeria for negligence.

Presenting the matter on the floor of the Assembly, Hon. Augustine Paul Ngo, representing Abual Odua in the state legislature hinted that the boy, a 12-year-old victim of the high tension cable who was full of life had lost his memory and his right hand due to the incident praying the House to look into the matter and take appropriate measure on the issue.

According to the parents who spoke through Hon. Ngo in the petition, the 12-year-old boy was electrocuted after he held the rail of their residence at Ojoto Street, Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt where the high tension was left dangling.

The petitioner maintained that the boy “is a bad testimony of neglect and carelessness of electrocution caused by a high tension wire which got severed from a Power Holding Company of Nigeria PHCN facility near their home, stressing that the wire with electric current was left dangling until it rested on the hand rail of the victim’s rented apartment.

The petitioner further explained that the boy ran out on that fateful day to welcome his mother and unfortunately touched the handrail of their apartment, adding that the high voltage flowing through the metals of the rail had enough current to kill an elephant.

“Even as the boy is still alive he has lost his memory, right hand from the shoulder down, has a sore tummy, the chances of his survival is 50/50 and the PHCN has not showed any interest on the matter and the parents of the victims have no money to sue the PHCN for negligence the petition stated. ###
