RSUST Students Protest Unfavourable School Fees Payment

If information reaching our news desk is anything to go by, then all may not be well with the state-owned Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), the state premier science university.

Students of the institution on 20th March, 2013, protested to the Rivers State House of Assembly, accusing the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. B. Barineme Fakae of introducing an unfavourable method of their school fees payment.

Mr. Promise Njoku, who spoke to our reporter, said Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) is running automated database system, whereby every thing about registration is done on line as students of the institution are compelled to pay their school fees on line.

The V.C, said the decision is for the student’s good, explaining that, his reason of insisting that the students pay their school fees on line is to checkmate lecturers who take advantage of the students’ goodwill, to witch hunt them.

According to the students, the V.C, in order to monitor the system on line, employed the services of a consultant. Promise Njoku, who spoke on behalf of the protesting students also told our reporter that the software has been manipulated by man where it has become so difficult for the students to understand the system.

He pointed out that all assignments, tests, course registration on line in 2012 were not recorded. “More cumbersome is that the V.C is telling the students to come back and register their courses and assignment,” he said.

Speaking further, Mr. Njoku said, students are pleading with the V.C to apply a more conducive method to help them end all forms of registration to enable them end their academic session successfully.

Mr. Njoku stated that he got to know these through the school’s website, lamenting that many students do not still know, what is happening.

All efforts to reach Prof. Fakae comments proved abortive as he could not pick his calls or even reply to the text message sent to him.

It would be recalled that Dr. Felix Igwe and his exco made similar accusation which also led to ASUU’s strike in the institution. ####
