Environment Commissioner Appeals For Media Partnership In Greening Project

The Rivers State government has appealed for active participation, partnership and propagation of media organization at ensuring the success of its mother earth greening project.

Commissioner For Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli made the appeal in Port Harcourt, when he hosted media executives.

The Environmental Ministry Boss explained that the project which involves the planning of trees and shrubs along the roads, streets, parks and gardens needed to be communicated to the communities across the states, adding that only the media can ensure the success since as he puts it “those of you in the media have more power because you have assess to information”.

The commissioner further said the government decided to appeal for their support because their organization are prominent and successful members of the community whose services are needed to salvage the problems posed by the environment.

According to him, the state which use to be called the Garden City has been polluted by the advent of hydrocarbon, adding that the issue at stake was that of health, lives and people emphasizing that it is the wish of every parents to have children more intelligent, successful, more educated and these things are only obtained in a conducive environment “querying what kind of environment do we hope to live for our children”.

He assured the media executive that the project is released as they are daily routing.

He further elucidated the importance of the trees to the environment which includes absorbing of carbon and release of oxygen to air, drinking of excess, water to check flood, erosion among others.

Dr. Weli enlightened them on the demand of the project which requires cooperation from families and individuals to plant trees that reflects their staff strength on members of the families, nurse and urged them to maintain it for 3-5 years with the name of their corporation displaced on their chosen position.

In her speech the general manager of the Radio Rivers FM, Port Harcourt, Ms. Medline Tador said that the heads of media Network has accepted the call of the commissioner and would go back to their establishment to work out the modality for the partnership.

According to her, the media organizations are part of the community and are ready to partner with the government to bring back the city of Port Harcourt to its original status.

It would be recalled that over the months, Dr. Nyema Weli had called on corporate organization to support the mother earth greening programme of the state which he said would come on stream from May this year. ###
