NULGE War Canon Launches in PH

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has launched what Rivers man may tag “War Canon commonly in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Capital, demanding financial, political autonomy of local government and job security in the sector.

The rally which was led by the NULGE National President, Comr. Ibrahim Khaleel with its theme, “Get Angry and fight back” was directly funded from the federation account for massive grassroots development, adequate care for traditional institution, entrenchment of accountability and efficient administration.

The movement equally frowned at selection and imposition of representatives or candidates at the local government areas, including abolition of state independent electoral commission and demanded true election of the people’s representatives.

NULGE at the same time condemned sole administration, caretaker committee (CTC) styles of administration and other forms of undemocratic electoral processes saying that local government as a tier of government should be recognized, adding that Local Government Service Commission and office of Auditor General of local government be enshrine in the Nigeria constitution also that teachers’ salary to be on first line charge.

Addressing the rally, the National President of NULGE, Comr. Khaleel pointed out how several committees and public hearings set up and held at different times and venue favoured their demand which they are embarking on now, stating that local government should not be inter-ruled by another tiers as that has caused so much set back in the system.

Ibrahim Khaleel used the avenue to commend Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates, the academic community, media establishments, civil societies, professional organizations, women and youth organizations, among others for their active participation in the struggle for local government autonomy, asking them not to drop their sword until the struggle is over.

In a press interview, the NULGE chairman Port Harcourt City chapter, Mrs. Blessing Amadi, said it is surprising that Rivers State being the home of the governors forum chairman is the stronghold of local government autonomy opposition, as governors are the blockade for the autonomy.

Blessing said the rally has to be held in Rivers State capital, Port Harcourt to let authorities know that the people are out to stand for their demand and that their voice must be heard as this is democratic government at work. ###
