Residents of Creek Road, in Port Harcourt town have cried out to the Rivers State Government over lack of portable drinking water, questioning the rationale behind denying the people a drinking water for more than two years.
The residents made this plea recently when speaking with our correspondent and described the act as wicked in the sight of God and humanity.
One of the residents who gave his name as Johnson Bokoko said he was so worried about the conduct of some members of the executive council of Rivers State who he said are not showing any concern about scarcity of water in some busy parts of the state capital, that are highly populated while the Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is waiting for public complaints to ensure good governance in all nooks and cranny of the state.
Mr. Johnson attributed the scarcity of water for over two years to lack of commitment in the ministry and disregard to plight of the people of the area, appealing to the governor to consider the appeal as paramount, adding that water is a free gift from God and every living being has a right to water irrespective of status, background, political and economic affiliations.
Some residents, who pleaded anonymity, due to their position, also accused the state government of not properly monitoring leakages on the water-pipes during drainage construction jobs by NDDC contractors who he accused of carelessly breaking these pipes.
“Most of these contractors and the workers came from other states and what they do is to do anything they like to execute their job without care to public utilities; they don’t also report pipes that are broken by them to authorities concerned to ensure speedy amendment to replacement of broken pipes. And if you go round all over the streets of Port Harcourt. Most especially the four major streets in town namely, Victoria, Niger, Bonny are full of leakages and till date no government authority has shown concern, is very bad”, he said.
Some of the residents also said money they suppose to use for their families have been spent on ‘meruwa’ and pure water and other substandard borehole that are not good for consumption. ###
