Protect Your Profession, Laboratory Scientists Told

Members of the Private Practitioner of Medical Laboratory Science, PPMLS have been called upon to inculcate the culture of using the media to protect the image of their profession.
Mr. Chidi Nduku the Vice Chairman of the Rivers State chapter made the call while delivering a lecture, entitled “The Need for the media to protect the laboratory scientists during the 2012 end of year dinner party, organized by the Diobu Zone Private Practitioner of Medical Science in Port Harcourt Nduku noted that the media is an important instrument and organ used in communicating to the whole world.
According to him, as a laboratory scientist, there is always an image to protect. “You ought to practice your profession in such a way that people will appreciate it, pointing out that using the media to protect the profession is all about marketing and packaging the profession to the global village.
Nduku who noted that the media is the agenda setter globally, frowning at the members’ inability of using the media to package their profession, unlike the herbalists who use the media to advertise their products on daily basis.
He enjoined their members to talk on their choice in the media, publish in the magazines laboratory science aspect, write an article in print, which he said will go a long way to expose the work of the laboratory scientists in public.
In his address at the ceremony, Elder Emmanuel R. Ibanga, the coordinator Diobu Zone of the group gave God the glory for protecting members of the PPMLS for the year, despite all odds, stressing that they came this far by miracle.
Elder Ibanga who could not hide his feelings on the harassment of the revenue collectors, the draconian policies, the high charges and payment initiated by the Sanitation Authority consultant which he said were too worrisome.
He further lamented that other revenue collectors also raised their charges to show class and creativity in fund raising.
According to him, it become imperative therefore to dialogue with the authorities concerned to reduce the charges. “Today we can be proud that our efforts were not in vain, as each contractor now pays what we bargained for, although Ministry of Commerce and Industry is still having their reservation”.
The co-ordinator of Diobu Zone PPMLS while commending Dr. Chris Mbata the Rivers State chairman of the Nigeria Medical laboratory Association, also lauded Maria Diribe for helping in no small measure to achieving their feat during the ceremony and thanked members for their support and urged those who have not been attending their meetings to have change of attitude.
In his speech, Dr. Chris Mbata the Rivers State chairman of the Medical Laboratory Association of Nigeria while commending members of Diobu zone for organizing the dinner party annually and for presenting him with a gift, advised members to always practice with dignity and portray the profession in good light.
He further advised them to ensure that they register with the profession, as well as get their practitioners licence to avoid being flushed out of the profession adding that the association was working out modality to purge quacks out of the system.
Earlier in his speech, Rev. Dr. A.U Isan who chaired the occasion expressed satisfaction with the success recorded by the Diobu zone of PPMLS since inception in 1990, attributing it to members support.
He described medical laboratory profession as the oracle of medicine and advised members to always project their profession and ensure that people recognize them by way of dressing and writing articles on the aspect of the profession.
Highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of gift to Dr. Mbata and other members of the PPMLS. ###
