Nmerukini Harps On LG Appointments

Henceforth appointment of directors in the Rivers State Unified Local Government Service would be based on hard work and productivity. This was disclosed in Port Harcourt recently by the Chairman of the State Local Government Service Commission, Chief Azubuike Nmerukini while performing the closing ceremony of a three-day workshop for staff of Local Governments from the Rivers South East Senatorial District on salary grade levels 04 to 07, organized by the Commission.
Chief Nmerukini said “gone were the days when appointments are based on geographical spread and seniority as this has not encouraged increase output in the service.
“If you want appointment, you must prove it by the way you perform your duty and how you fair in other positions given to you in the past”, he said.
The Chairman revealed that the Commission as a matter of priority had placed training and re-training of the workforce on the front burner of the scheme of things.
He said on assumption of office of the present commission, it was decided that all cadres of staff in the third tier government would he adequately trained to improve service delivery in the system.
Chief Nmerukini stated that it was in keeping with this goal that the Commission gave opportunity to 1150 junior and middle level staff of the 23 local governments in the state to be trained on civil service rules.
The Chairman who was represented by the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Training in the Commission, Chief Jonah Tamuno announced that in the current year the Commission would embark on senior staff training.
In his speech a member of the Sub Committee on Training and a Commission in the Commissioner, Chief Cyprian Chukwu commended the staff for their commitments and devotion during the three-day workshop.
Chief Chukwu noted that the staff who are the bedrock of the service are now well-equipped to discharge their duties faithfully and be an example to those that have not been trained.
Also speaking, the Chief Co-ordinator of the workshop, Dr Okoro Okara said that during the period participants were exposed to topics such as Workplace, Health, Safety and Security; Local Government Administration, Objective and Challenges, Communications and Human Relations and Productivity as well as Work Attitude Improvement Techniques.
According to him, other topics discussed include Local Government Staff Environment and Challenges, Basic Accounting Principles and Effective Team. He expressed confidence that participants would positively deliver on every aspect of the service in their various duty posts.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mr. Godwin Etete and Mrs Udefien Michael thanked the Commission for sponsoring the workshop which they said has given them opportunity to improve themselves.
They said the huge amount spent for the workshop was not a waste, as they promised to contribute to the improvement of the third tier service for the development of the grassroots. ####
