2012/13 Legal Year: Rivers CJ Releases 505 Prison Inmates

No fewer than 505 inmates have been released at the federal prisons, Port Harcourt, by the Chief Judge of Rivers State Justice Iche Ndu during the 2012 gaol delivery exercise.
Justice Iche Ndu disclosed this while addressing members of legal profession and other guests during 2012/2013 legal year in Port Harcourt.
According to him, “I visited the prisons on 21st and 22nd May, 2012; in that exercise and pursuant to the provisional of the criminal justice release from customary provision Act, I ordered the release of 505 persons.
Justice Ndu, who hinted that the 2012/2013 legal year ceremony will be his last as Chief Judge of the state, enumerated some of his achievements which he said include the elevation of Hon. Justice Obie Daniel Kalio to a justice of the court of Appeal while eight high court judges, including Justice S. Boambo, Justice ICP Igwe, Hon. E.S Nyesom Wike, Justice I. R. Minakiri, Hon. Justice C. N. Wali, Hon. Justice I. Wodi, among others, were appointed and sworn in as judges, completion of eight projects in customary court of Appeal in various courts in Rivers State and an ongoing project, disposal of some filed cases, employment of some staff in the judicial service commission, provision of information technology in the judiciary, among others.
He expressed grief over the death of some of their colleagues in the state judiciary and commended the executive and legislative arms of the government, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Hon. Otelemaba Amakiri respectively while congratulating members of the Rivers State judiciary for their 2012/2013 legal year celebration and urged members of the judiciary to put in their conscience to work while handling cases brought before them.
The State Chief executive, who was represented by Barr. Worgu Gboms the state commissioner for justice and Attorney General urged legal practitioners in the state to act uprightly while performing their duties.
Barr. Gboms, who acted in dual capacity, commended Justice Iche Ndu for his wonderful achievements and exemplary leadership and urged other legal practitioners in the state to emulate him.
In his speech, OCJ Okocha, former President of the Nigeria Bar Association, while commending members of the state judiciary for their wonderful performances, urged them to always imbibe the culture of maintaining the rules and regulations of the bar in the discharge of their duties. ###
