Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola has indeed proved that he is a honest sportsman as he did not influence the 18th National Sports Festival to his state favour, while he has all the antics at his disposal to do that.
He made the statement and he kept to his words. This is what is expected of a leader. Fashola is a leader indeed that had come to prove that from the soil of Nigeria, disciplined and principled leader worth of emulation abound.
The purpose of the National Sports Festival is to discover talent for Nigeria, so that in international sports “meets” or competitions the talents so discovered from the organized national sports event could represent Nigeria in the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics and other international competitions. Fashola has demonstrated that in action as he wanted the 18th National Sports Festival to fulfill that purpose for the sports fiesta. It is worth mentioning that those who wanted to win by all costs were easily discovered as the observer committee he puts in place caught a Cameroonian wanting to cheat in the colours of Anambra State in the weightlifting event, Rivers State was caught featuring a female swimming athlete, from Bayelsa State in the swimming event.
The talents had been discovered. Yes, Fashola had created the platform in discovering the wanted talents in all the sports without any form of cheating, it is now left for the National Sports Commission (NSC) to harmonize and harness these talents as to use them in early preparation for future international competitions. Fashola may not have the opportunity to oversee the wellbeing of the discovered athletes, as his job has ended at the 18th National Sports Festival. ###
