PHALGA: Councilor Empowers Ward 7 Members

Members of Ward 7 in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area (PHALGA) will ever remain grateful to the councilor representing the ward, Mrs. Gloria Kalada Nonju for empowering close to fifty members of her constituency.
Our correspondent, who covered the ceremony, reported that items such as clippers, generating sets, wheelbarrows, dryers, football boots, sewing machines and jerseys were donated to recipients who are members of the ward.
In an interview with journalists Mrs. Nonju said she discovered that it is better to teach the people how to fish instead of giving them fish. According to her, she recognizes the level of poverty amongst the people of her ward, hence the need to empower them. She expressed confidence that the gesture will go a long way to alleviating the sufferings of the people.
Mrs. Nonju estimated the cost of the goods to about N2m, which she said was got from gradual savings since she assumed office.
Mrs. Nonju who is also the Deputy Leader of PHALGA Legislative Assembly and Leader of female councillors in the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State said she is grateful to God for making it possible for her to attain the position of a councilor.
Addressing the gathering at Borokiri, Dame Judith Amaechi, wife of the Rivers State Governor, said she was proud of the Ward 7 Councilor.
The first lady described the gesture as unprecedented and urged Mrs. Nonju to sustain the tempo.
Dame Judith charged other councillors and indeed political office holders to borrow a leaf from her.
In their goodwill messages, the Mayor of Port Harcourt, Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo, Hon. Ken Chikere and Hon. Irene Inimgba wished the Councillor more exploits in her chosen career.
Some beneficiaries in the persons of Madam Sara Egu and Mr. Dominic Oko expressed appreciation to the councilor for her kind gesture, praying God to bless her.
They promised to use the items judiciously.
