Rivers: Youth Corper Slumps At Passing Out Parade

The 2012 passing out parade of Batch C NYSC at Nonwa-Gbam in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State almost ended in tragedy when one youth corps member who slumped after standing for hours under the sun waiting for the governor’s arrival to the NYSC orientation camp, Tai Local Government Area venue for, the closing ceremony of the 2012 Batch “C” orientation programme on Tuesday 27th November, 2012.
The Newswriter gathered from reliable sources that Governor Amaechi, who was the Special Guest of Honour but represented by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the State, Hon. Worgu Boms, did not arrive the venue till late in the afternoon, resulted to the ugly incident.
According to the sources, this late arrival of the Special Guest of Honour resulted in the over 3000 youth corps members standing under the harsh sun with most of them hungry, without anything to cover their heads apart from their tiny caps, for over five hours before the eventual arrival of the governor’s representative.
Sources said further that most of the corpers, at a stage could not endure the suffering went to look for food and water to regain their strength while the guests and camp officials also complained bitterly in the stress.
However, when Governor’s representative finally arrived, the corpers filed out again and it was at that juncture that one of them, a male collapsed and had to be carried out on a stretcher by members of the Red Cross.
The identity of the victim could not be ascertained as at press time, The Newswriter’s investigations revealed however that he was later revived. ###
