The Rivers State government is on its way to establishing a football academy for young talents in the state.
Commissioner for Sports Hon. Fred Igwe made this known to sports journalists in a SWAN forum on Tuesday, 6th November, 2012. He revealed that the state executive has already acquired land for the academy.
Hon. Igwe explained that the academy will feed the state-owned teams, Sharks and Dolphins, pointing out that only talented footballers from a much more younger age would be accommodated, adding that to make this happen, coaches will be sent out to scout for talents at the rural areas across the 23 LGAs of the state.
According to him, the aim is to have a solid future for talented footballers littered in the grassroots, as well as giving opportunity for age grade football to strive in the state. If that happens, Sharks and Dolphins would be the toast of the Nigeria Premier League as they would not only perform well, but will be the base on which the national U-17 junior and U-23 teams would lean on when it comes to age grade football in Nigeria. ####
