The Nigeria Volleyball Federation in conjunction with Master Energy oil and gas Limited and Hon. Dakuku Peterside, member House of Representatives Abuja is organizing South South national open male and female volleyball championship here in Port Harcourt.
The Championship commenced 2nd and ends on 18th November, 2012, at Alfred Diette Spiff Sports complex, Civic Centre, Port Harcourt.
The First Vice President Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Ebenezer Mora-Kinyo in a press conference at landmark reveal that the aim of the championship is to bring the youths together in such a way that they can use their energy meaningfully and to discover new talent to add to the existing talents in volleyball federation. He said that, this is the first edition, he hopes the championship will continue after the first edition, appealing to the press to sell the event to the public.
Speaking to the press, Hon Fred Igwe Commissioner for Sports, Rivers State started by revealing to the press that lots of things are happening at Civic centre complex, hence the Sports Ministry will reclaim to stop the activities going on there.
He said that the championship has revealed a lot of things to the sports ministry, adding that he has to cancel lots of social activities to host the volleyball championship.
Hon. Igwe confirmed to the press that the very volleyball team participating in the championship is the Rivers team volleyball team that participated and won gold in the 17th National Sports Festival, pointing out that the purpose of the champion is to discover new talents.
The commissioner stated that the state expects more and more corporate sponsors to sponsor more championships in all the existing sports events in the state.
The championship grand finale will be held on Thursday, having the MD of NDDC as the Special Guest of Honour, while the State Chief Executive will also be in attendance.
The winner of the first position will take home N250,000 with the trophy; second place team will make do with N200,000 while third place team will go home with N150,000.
Six (6) teams are participating in the championship. ###
