The chairman of Nigeria UPR Media Network Mr. Pius Dukor, said Human Rights education in the country will bring about fast development.
Mr. Dukor dropped the hint at an emergency meeting of the group in Port Harcourt on Friday, October 8, 2012.
Mr. Dukor stated that Human Rights education should be enshrined in our school curriculum to give a better understanding about human rights issues. A one time vice chairman of Gokana Local Government Area, condemned some of the Human Rights Violation in the Niger Delta, especially the recent gruesome murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt describing it as in human, barbaric and a violation of the victims right to life.
He said the students were subjected to jungle justice, tortured and were killed while others were watching.
The chairman of the Nigeria UPR Media Network stated that the culprits should be brought to book without delay.
On the issue of flood, the body sympathized with flood victims and call on the federal, state, local governments and corporate organizations to step-up measures that will alleviate the suffering of the people by providing, drugs mosquitoes nets food and other materials that will assist the displaced people and ensure food security in region.
Other issues deliberated upon in the meeting, were the deplorable condition of the Akpajo-Eleme axis of the East-West Road. The body called on relevant government agencies to ameliorate the suffering of motorists describing it as a death trap.
The Nigeria UPR Media Network viewed the on-going constitutional review as excluding others from participating in the constitution of their country, especially the location of the review in Abuja and the “No Go Areas,” describing it as an infringement on their fundamental human right.
The group viewed the violation of human rights as some of the causes of under develop is the Niger Delta.
The body stated that right to education is a key to development and social transformation. Therefore, right to education should be protected by individual alone but should be enforced by government to reduce the level of illiteracy. The Human rights journalist stated that the girl child education is very important to the promotion of social stability and growth in the region.
The group called on Nigerians, especially the Niger Delta people to know their rights before they could talk of violation, noting that there are various forms of human rights violation.
They posited that the African charter on Human and people’s rights chapter one article 4 states that “Human rights are inviolable. Every human being shall be entitled to respect for his life and the integrity of his person. No one maybe arbitrarily deprived of his right,” among others. ###
