Luck has ran against 38 persons who violated the movement restriction of the Rivers State environmental sanitation. The suspects were picked up at different places last Saturday during this month’s sanitation exercise.
The inspection team led by the Commissioner for Environmental, Dr. Nyema Weli accosted the lawless persons who were either roaming about or traveling from neighbouring states.
The suspects were consequently convicted for two weeks imprisonment, with option of fine, to serve as deterrent to others.
Meanwhile the people of the state have been called upon to take proactive measures towards cleaning their drains and gutters to check flooding.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli made the call at Akpajo, Saturday while inspecting the October monthly sanitation in Port Harcourt and Eleme Local Government Areas.

Dr. Nyema regretted the havoc being experienced at some parts of the state because of flooding.
He advised the affected communities to vacate to higher land, adding that government would do its best to provide the necessary assistance to such communities.
The Commissioner also called on communities to inform the Ministry of Environment of any flooding for quick intervention.
The Environment boss frowned at the attitude of the Police who he said have turned to taxi drivers during sanitation periods, adding that government is putting in place a frame work to check environmental sanitation defaulters. ###
