Hon. Nmerukini Harps On Training For LGA Workers

The chairman of Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, Chief Hon. Azubuike Nmerukini. said training of the local government workers is a panacea for grassroots development.
The chairman made the remark during the opening of a 3-day workshop on Work Ethics and Organizational Productivity for local government staff on grade level 04-07 of Rivers East Senatorial District.
The event took place from September, 17 -19, 2012. at the conference Hall of Ministry of Justice, State secretariat.
In his address, Chief Nmerukini lamented the poor value exhibited by the present day civil servants in their work which is contrary to the training given to them by the colonial masters.
The chairman of the Local Government Service Commission said those values and good virtues make them outstanding from those in the society.
He pointed out that those ethics are punctuality, regularity to work, simplicity, neatness in dressing, the use of courteous language, humility, respect, diligence to work and that they have all been jettisoned by the present day workforce.
The former Rivers State House of Assembly member and former Phalga boss said today’s workers are mostly known with negative activities like arrogance, rudeness, lateness to work and absenteeism, stressing that the workshop is geared towards fighting these negative tendencies among the average civil servant.
Hon. Nmerukini stated that this is the first of its kind and is aimed at improving the quality of the junior cadre.
He said that the senior cadre will soon benefit from this type of programme.
Shortly after the opening ceremony, Chief Nmerukini while addressing journalists said he believed that after the training the workers would exhibit the right attitude to work and better equipped with more skills.
He told media men that the commission has sponsored programmes for staff of local government in the Ordinary Diploma and Bachelors to post graduate level at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Answering questions, the chairman said without effective training there will be no effective development.
The commissioner for local government was represented at the event by the permanent secretary of the ministry. ###
