The Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers has backed the Federal Government’s readiness to commence the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)’s report on the clean up of Ogoniland.
Chairman of the council and Gbenemene of Tai Kingdom King Godwin N.K Gininwa who said this during a meeting with officials of the Hydro Carbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) in his palace at Korokoro Tai recently, said the council is happy that the Federal Government has given attention to the UNEP report.
King Gininwa who is also the Chairman of Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers said that the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers has already appointed a committee to work with the Agency to ensure the effective implementation of the report.
He also said that the Ogonis are not divided over the issue, stressing that the entire Ogoni people have resolved to ensure peace reign in the area.
National coordinator of HYPREP Chief (Mrs.) Joi Nunieh-Okunu told the Traditional Rulers that the Federal Government has budgeted one billion dollars for the exercise in Ogoniland.
Mrs. Nunieh-Okunu said that the exercise is not only to clean-up but to restore the area to its former glory.
She stressed the need for youths in Ogoniland to desist from involvement in bunkering as the clean up exercise will be nonsense if the activities is not stop.
The HYPREP coordinator also urged the people to form cooperative society to enable them participate in the exercise maintaining that the Agency will conduct soil test before the cleanup exercise, while a centre of excellence will be setup in the area to ensure that it is well done.
