The Rivers State Chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN says it welcomes the enthronement of true federalism in Nigeria as being advocated by Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi who is on study tour of the German Federal System of government but regrets that Amaechi is the greatest offender of his own advocacy.
The publicity secretary of ACN, Jerry Needam came out with this while reacting to Amaechi’s observation that the basic difference between the German democracy and that of Nigeria is the lack of implementation of laws by the Nigerian Government to support development in the states.
Jerry Needam contends that democracy also extends to the relationship between states and Local Governments in which Gov. Amaechi is noted to be acting as a Sole Administrator, appointing and removing elected council leadership at will and not having regard for rule of law.
Gov. Amaechi was quoted in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as blaming the Nigerian Federal system for seemingly competing with the states instead of helping them to grow as much as, according to ACN he, Amaechi is lording it over Rivers people in a manner done in authoritarian societies.
The ACN reminded the Governor of Governors Forum that federalism is all encompassing and does not apply one way between the federal and states, and another between the states and local governments, neither does it encourage disregard and nonchalance to laws of the land and court rulings.
The ACN spokesman, Jerry Needam argues that though worthwhile, Governor Chibuike lacks the moral justification to castigate his PDP led-federal government for usurping the functions and rights of the states as that amounts to polluting the air and turning round to look for who is responsible.
“This is pure self deceit, the ACN remarked.
