The Rivers State Chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, says the failure of the Transport Summit organized by the State Ministry of Transport to allay fears of the people about the Monorail Project and proffer answers to contentious issues militating against the project, make the submit a mere jamboree and an added avenue of milking the State dry.
The Party in a Statement in Port Harcourt and signed by the Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam, while reacting to the Transport Submit held in Port Harcourt, describes the Monorail as a monumental fraud and carpeted the Rivers State government for failing to exploit the opportunity provided by the Submit to adequately lay to rest contentious issues about the project.
The ACN called on the Rivers State Government to demonstrate their frugality and sincerity about the project by publicly disclosing what prompted the secret astronomical increase of the value of the Monorail project from 15 billion naira to 47 billion naira to 150 billion naira and now to 300 billion naira, representing a State budget according to the Transport Commissioner, George Tolofari.
The Party also demanded public clarifications on what led to the withdrawal of a partner from the project, why equipment meant for the project are attracting demurrage at Onne Port and who are the members of the Board of the Monorail Project.
Jerry Needam further disclosed that lack of sincerity on the part of government, refusing to provide answers and above all, the project is shrouded in secrecy, compelled the ACN to call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Independent and Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC to investigate the Monorail Project, still crawling, for about 4 years today.
The party describes as waste of public funds, the millions of naira spent on the transport submit, which according to the ACN, large chunk of the money, ended up in the pockets of the organizers and created emergency relief for political jobbers of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The ACN assured that they will diligently pursue all matters relating to the Monorail project to its logical conclusion.
