Methodist Church Honours Members

The Methodist Church of Nigeria, Diocese of Port Harcourt, has honoured some of its members with several awards on Sunday, June 24, 2012, at the Wesley Methodist Church, Harbour Road, Port Harcourt.
The awards were, Distinguished Merit Award, Order of the Diocese of Port Harcourt (ODPH) 2012 Award, Elder 2012 Award and Diocesan Medal of Commendation, DMC, 2012 Award.
The ceremony was the 30th Diocesan anniversary with the theme, “Give Me this Mountain,” with His Grace, Most Rev. Sunday B. Uko, Archbishop of Ikot Ekpene, as the Chief Officiant.
Giving the theme talk, Most Rev. Uko said God could do anything in a person’s life and called for total commitment and dedication by both the ordained and others.
The Archbishop reminded the congregation of the journey so far and the challenges ahead and urged them to understand what to give, who to give, when to give and where to give.
“God can do anything, but he needs people to do it. So make yourself available for the work of God. Let God use you. Be instruments of blessing for the church and your families,” he enjoined the congregation.
Mrs. Dorathy B. Badey who was among the elders that received the award, spoke to The Newswriter, shortly after the ceremony. (See Pictures Back Page)
Expressing her joy, Mrs. Badey said she felt happy for the honour given to her. She said the award had lifted her spirit, as she had been downcast since the death of her husband and later her father.
Mrs. Badey said she never knew that the church would recognize and honour her, in the midst of her sadness.
The church, she said, duly recognized the contributions, dedication and participation of members before giving out the honour and that apart from donating her land to the Methodist Church Bodo and a foundation member, she had been chairman of the Sunday School Board, President of the Women’s Fellowship, Superintendent of Sunday School and member of many other societies in the church.
“I feel really, really, happy to be honoured as elder of the church. I have been down in spirit since my husband died and later, my father also. I was uncomfortable,” Mrs. Badey stated as she commented on the honour.
She added, “I never knew that in the midst of this sadness, the church will recognize me, as the two events, the death of my husband and my father, really demoralized me. The church recognizes your contributions, commitment and participation before giving the honour. My spirit went down, but now I am revived.”
The Methodist church, Nigeria is 170 years old in Nigeria.
