The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, (ASUP), Rivers State College of Arts and Science (RIVCAS) Rumuola, Port Harcourt, Bar. Indy c. Enyindah said it is imperative to answer Port Harcourt Polytechnic now that all the status has been given to the college.
The Chairman made the remark during the 70th NEC. Regular meeting of the body holding at RIVCAS, Port Harcourt from 4th 7th of June, 2012. Bar. Enyindah in an address presented at the occasion said it is important for the change of name of the college to reflect the new status, noting that the college has metamorphosed from School of Basic Studies (SBS) to RIVCAS and the new name needed to be implemented, which is Port Harcourt Polytechnic. He said because of the present name, most funding like the ETF sponsorship and other Educational funding has eluded the institution.
On welfare of members, Bar. Enyindah positioned that very soon residential houses will be built with mortgage facilities for staff while promotion of staff is currently going on as against what happened in the past.
In an interview with journalists after the program, the ASUP National President, Mr. Chibuzo Asomugha described the meeting in Port Harcourt as vital to the development of education in Nigeria.
The National President of the body positioned that re-orientation of the mindset of Nigerians towards quality education is a panacea to educational transformation in the country. Mr. Asumugha suggested that training and retraining of teachers in the curriculum will help to mold the students and will re-direct and re-shape the standard of education that is presumed to be falling in Nigeria.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Six Governing Council, Rivers State college of Arts and Science, Port Harcourt, Dr. Mrs. Soba M. Wilcox in an address presented at the event, recalled that the college of Arts and Science was established on January 21, 1991, by an Edict of the Rivers State government although it started as the Rivers State School of Basic Studies on the June 1, 1977 at the same venue. Dr. Wilcox said the school has delivered on its mandate and still has more to offer to the state and the nation. She pleaded with the relevant authorities to assist the institution to have access to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Petroleum Development Trust Fund (PTDF), Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and NBTE to help in the developmental purposes, while thanking the Governor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi and the Commission of Education, Rivers State, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nimi for their contributions and consistency in handling the issues of the college.
In another Development, a Senior Lecturer of the Institution, Mr. Lucky Eleanya said the school is very active and has metamorphosed into three stages and phases with much transformation. Mr. Eleanya told journalists that the high level of intellectual activities would attract fund to the school.
He said lecturers are courageous, determined and with commitment, seriousness, dedicated, therefore they needed encouragement to continue in the institution. Others who spoke include the National Financial Secretary of the body, Comrade Rev. B.G. Nnaa. ###
