The Niger Delta Development Commission has donated relief materials and drugs to victims of the recent rig gas well-head blow out at Chevron’s North Apoi field, Kolama 1 and 2 in Bayelsa State, ahead of plans to provide portable water for the affected Communities.
Presenting the items on behalf of the Managing Director, Dr. Christian Oboh, Bayelsa State representative on the Board, Mr. Eddy Orubo said the exercise was in response to President Jonathan’s directive to development agencies in the region to assist the people.
“The Commission is also conscious of the health hazard that the spill and explosion poses for the people that is why we are partnering with Rural Health Initiative (RAHI) to provide them with emergency relief materials and health care”.
The NDDC, he said is committed to delivering its mandate to the people by embarking on programmes designed to improve their well being.
“We will not fail in our mandate, we will continue to intervene where there are difficulties, we produce the bulk of this Nation’s wealth, as Niger Deltans and we are not benefiting enough from it” Dr. Oboh lamented.
On portable water, the Managing Director assured that the request would be considered in the Commission’s 2012 budget.
On his part, Executive Officer, RAHI Medical Outfit, Dr. Chris Ekiyor commended the NDDC for providing the logistics, including the funds for the emergency relief materials and urged the people to make judicious use of them.
