What type of marriage is ideal for the African woman?
Marriage in our society is the bringing of two agreed souls to live together under the umbrella of the institution called marriage. This is done after the performance of rites according to the tradition and custom of the ethnicity of the lady in particular.
This calls for examination of what is happening today in terms of the Saturday marriage rites performed almost each week, particularly in Port Harcourt.
We have two basic recognized or approval marriage rites worldwide, namely, traditional and court marriages. Let it be known from Soul Mate that the moment the parent of the bride accepts the groom in whatever manner of rite, that marriage is contracted before Heaven and Earth.
The parents of the bride may accept only drink and bless the marriage and that marriage is divinely recognized and honoured before men and Yahweh. In doing that, it depends on the family involved. The parent may charge money with whatever added ceremony or celebration, all in the name of that marriage and that marriage stands recognized before Heaven and Earth.
The second marriage is that of bringing the law into focus, which is, marrying according to the constitution of that country. In this type of marriage, it does not take a crowd. One or two could perform the marital rites by accompanying the bride and groom to be. Parents may not be there as the case may be, in certain cases. Where the two love birds are refused approval to get married by the parents, this is the type of marriage many ladies go for.
In all the marriages conducted in Port Harcourt and beyond, that of Britain is borrowed into Africa. The white wedding as it is tagged, is basically the marriage tradition of the Britain. In other words, it was borrowed by whoever that is involved in it. Take for example, the biblical example in St. John 2:1-11. This marriage was traditional marriage of the Canaan people in Galilee. This is to stress the point that every ethnicity or community has its own way of marriage rites. So be informed that the marriage being conducted here and there called white wedding is a borrowed one from Britain.
