NUJ National Election: Aspirant Blames Journalists For Encouraging Fakes

The continued accommodation of fake journalists in the profession by media members has been attributed to the reason for not getting rid of fake journalists in the system.
Prince Rotimi Obamuwagun, Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union Journalists, NUJ, who was in Port Harcourt with his team to solicit for the support of members of the state council of NUJ for his re-election as the deputy national president in the forthcoming 4th Triennial Delegate Conference, Abuja 2012, made the assertion while addressing a cross section of journalists in Port Harcourt last weekend.
He was dismayed that despite moves by the national body of union to wipe out fake journalists in the profession, touts are still parading themselves as journalists. He blamed genuine journalists for accommodating them.
According to him, any one who cannot pay his professional dues is not a journalist, such persons should be arrested for parading him/herself as journalists to serve as determinant to others, adding that the issuance of membership ID card to genuine journalists is still on.
The former chairman of Ondo state council of NUJ advised journalists not to accommodate fakes in the profession rather should arrest anyone found parading himself as journalist to achieve the union’s desire to get rid of the fake journalists in the profession.
The Ondo state born deputy national president of NUJ recalled the achievements of the present executive, such as acquisition of five hectres of land worth N800m for the building of NUJ national secretariat, International Institute of Journalism, IIJ, which would generate revenue for the union and for the welfare of the union members, ensuring peaceful existence among union members, insurance scheme for journalists, donation of 1.5 million naira each to a widow and a man who was amputated as a result of accident, among others,
He pointe out the cordial relationship existing between him and his boss, the national president of the union and appealed to members of the Rivers NUJ to give him the mandate to sustain their commitment and preserve a team that works. ###
